The Hype About Soy Wax

We loved the idea of using a natural alternative that works just as good, if not better than the highly toxic paraffin candles found in most stores. Soybeans are grown extensively making soy wax readily available & renewable. Other natural waxes like beeswax are a great alternative to paraffin candles too but tend to be very expensive as their supply is limited.

Soy wax was invented by a group of college students in 196 at Purdue University. The students were asked to develop a birthday candle using a renewable resource. They figured out how to solidify soy bean oil and won first place in the competition. Thanks to them we now have the opportunity to create naturally better for you, clean burning soy candles.

Soy how is soy wax created? It comes from hydrogenated soybean oil and after harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. Because it is a softer wax it's used mostly in container candles and has a long burn rate.

You may be asking yourself....Well what is paraffin?

It is the bad guy in the world of candle wax in our opinion and we believe cutting corners deserves a hand slap. You may have not even realized that such a toxic chemical was in your candle wax because it's a cheaper alternative to natural waxes like Soy. Essentially it is a refined gasoline by-product, the black sludge, derived from petroleum, and is found in most candles.

When burned in candles it creates toxic Benzene and Toluene which are the same chemical found in diesel fuel fumes.

With that being said, know that, the cheaper the candle the more chemicals it probably has. Candles may of Soy must be labeled 100% Soy, to be natural, with no paraffin. Some companies will use only a small amount of Soy mixed with paraffin, and then label them as "Soy Candles" or "Soy Blend". When you see the term blend it can be deceiving as you don't really know what other products or how much Soy is actually used in the candles.

You may have heard us use the term, "Clean Burning". This is when your candle burns with little soot released. Soot is the black stuff you see on your candle vessels, walls, and surfaces. The amount of soot a soy candle produces is far less the paraffin candles. Plus, soy candles are non-toxic, meaning they don't release toxins into the air that are harmful to your health.

If you're looking for longevity in your candles. Soy candles typically last longer than paraffin candles too. Their slower burn rate and cooler burning temperatures make soy candles longer-lasting which means your won't need to replace them as quickly.

One could say the last epic fact about soy candles is the most important. We all love a room filled with beautiful aromas. Soy candles are known to hold their scent extremely well. They burn slow releasing their scent nice and steady instead of an immediate wave of a strong overpowering aroma. A more pleasant atmosphere is created and enjoyed for longer periods of time.

We hope you have fallen in love with the idea of a better candle alternative. Soy wax has become very popular in the quest for the perfect candles. We want you to have the ability to make you own soy candles at home using our Mood Revival Microwaveable Candle Making Kits.

You can now find comfort in knowing the benefits behind using Soy Wax instead of other cheaper alternatives.
